Some Affordable Vintage 36mm Explorer Homage,Which One Is Your Perfect GADA Watches?

The Vintage 36mm Explorer is A Good GADA Watch Option

Go Anywhere, Do Anything - yes, as the name suggests, a GADA watch is essentially an everyday timepiece, whether it's for the office, the gym, the pool, travel, or just lounging on the sofa, it's the emblem of the watch you wear most often.

The term "GADA watch" is frequently used in watch enthusiast circles, representing "Go Anywhere, Do Anything." This type of watch seamlessly transitions from business meetings to weekend getaways, pairs well with most of the clothes in your wardrobe, and is sturdy enough to be versatile, durable, and always stylish.

In general, the best GADA watches have the following characteristics:

The case is not too thick or heavy, so it remains comfortable to wear for extended periods. Waterproof to at least 100 meters. Neutral dial color, such as black. Metal bracelet (a lug width of 20mm is best suited for a variety of strap options). Good luminosity, for clear and easy reading in all conditions. Scratch-resistant sapphire crystal. Considering durability, the Explorer watch is undoubtedly the most iconic GADA wristwatch. From the 1953 vintage 36mm Explorer to present-day versions, Rolex has introduced numerous iterations of the Explorer. In the world of Explorer watches, there's always a version that suits your wrist best.

The Famous Vintage Explorer Watches in History

Explorer Ref. 6150

The first model of Explorer watch launched by Rolex in 1952 was the Explorer Ref. 6150. This vintage 36mm Explorer had a diameter of 35mm, commemorating the historic expedition of Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay to the summit of Mount Everest. After May 1953, the word "Explorer" first appeared on the dial of this model.

Explorer Ref. 6298

The Ref.6298, also with a 36mm diameter, features the Explorer-style 3/6/9 dial layout. Some collectors classify this model as a vintage "EXPLORER," but fundamentally, the main difference between oyster perpetual watches and the Explorers made in the mid-1950s lies in the "EXPLORER" text on the dial. Thus, it is not a true 36mm vintage Explorer.

Explorer Ref. 6350

The late 1953 saw the release of the Ref. 6350 version. Although a few 6150 models used the name "Explorer" on the dial, the 6350 was the first model to consistently use the Explorer name on the dial. Therefore, it is regarded by many collectors as the first true Explorer model. Besides continuing many design cues related to the Explorer series used in earlier versions, such as the 3-6-9 Arabic numerals, the Ref. 6350 also had the most surprising dial change, featuring a honeycomb dial.

Explorer Ref. 6610

Initially launched in 1959, the Ref.6610 closely resembled the Ref.6150 in appearance. The Ref.6610 used a thinner 1030 mechanical movement, whereas the larger movement of the 6150 required a bubble back case to accommodate it, identifiable by observing whether the back is flat or not. Approximately produced for about five years, the 6610 was only a small fraction of the production of the 1016, making it extremely rare.

Explorer Ref. 1016

Produced from 1963 to 1989, this model was one of the most iconic Rolex watches. It used the 1560 movement and increased water resistance to 100 meters. The 1016 fully transitioned to tritium as a luminescent material instead of the highly radioactive radium used in the 6610. The 1016 was a watch that could be considered perfect - balanced, effortlessly stylish, and perfectly functional, making it an excellent GADA watch of its time.

Explorer II Ref. 1655

The vintage Explorer 1655, introduced in 1971, was designed for cave explorers, a very niche market. The watch featured a fixed bezel and unique features such as a 24-hour hand, often confused with a GMT hand. The idea behind these unique features was to cater to cave explorers who "quickly lose all concepts of time: morning, afternoon, day, or night" while working in complete darkness for several days.

Explorer Ref. 14270

The Rolex Explorer 14270 was introduced at the Basel Fair in 1989, featuring a sapphire crystal glass for the first time. The 14270 positioned Rolex at the intersection of sports and luxury, holding significant importance in the history of watchmaking. The watch existed in four main variants throughout its production from around 1989 to 2001, named "Blackout," "T-Swiss," "Swiss Only," and "Swiss Made," each named after specific changes in the dial itself.

Many do not consider the 36mm diameter 14270 to be part of the vintage Explorer range; it is not old enough to be considered vintage, yet not new enough to be considered cool. It is an underestimated timepiece in the collecting world but has a passionate following among enthusiasts.

Explorer Ref. 114270

The 114270 is a modern version produced at some point in the 2000s, but as a series that has been continuous since the 1950s, it naturally carries a certain nostalgic retro feel. It is equipped with a black dial adorned with SuperLuminova luminescent material. Understated yet sturdy, it is often referred to as the "one watch" or "only watch" that people need.

Explorer Ref. 214270

The 214270 was introduced in 2010, and while the original vintage Explorer had a diameter of 36mm, we naturally feel that 36mm is more like wearing an old watch. However, for a sports watch, 39mm is an outstanding size (and still retained). The 21470 increased the diameter to 39mm, not only because the market tends towards larger diameters, but also to emphasize the watch's sporty style.

Additionally, the 21470 added solid end links to the Oyster bracelet and updated the movement to the modern 3132 caliber. It uses Rolex's proprietary Chromalight technology for luminescence, emitting a blue light as daylight fades.

The Collectible Value of Vintage Explorer Watches

As time passes, Vintage Explorer watches have become the focal point for watch collectors due to their unique designs, superior craftsmanship, and rich history. These classic timepieces not only carry a wealth of historical background but also showcase the excellence of Rolex craftsmanship. Through auction records and the trends in the collecting market, we can glimpse into the collectible value of Vintage Explorer watches.

The value of Vintage Explorer watches lies not only in their rarity but also in their production numbers. One of the most sought-after versions is the Explorer 1016 produced in the 1960s. Its minimalist design, reliable mechanics, and outstanding performance in challenging environments have made it highly desirable among watch collectors. In the auction market, a well-preserved 1960s Explorer 1016 can often fetch prices in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. The most expensive Vintage 36mm Explorer sold at auction was the Rolex Explorer 1016 produced in 1963, which sold for over $250,000 at a renowned international auction house in 2018. In 2019, a 1970s vintage 36mm Explorer 1655 "Steve McQueen" also sold for approximately $200,000, and in 2020, a 1960s Rolex Explorer 1016 "Gilt Dial" fetched around $150,000 at another well-known international auction house.

As you might guess, there is significant fluctuation in the auction market, especially concerning specific vintage Rolex Explorer models. For example, the 6610 was produced for about five years and was then replaced by the 1016 model in 1963, making it extremely rare. Furthermore, as the 6610 is an older reference model, there is a higher likelihood of parts replacement during its use, especially for severely aged dials, paint defects, and radium degradation. This has resulted in fewer genuine 6610s in the market. Consequently, the price of the 6610 has been steadily increasing, with a good one selling for at least $10,000, and in excellent condition, it could approach $15,000. If you're looking for a unique and valuable collectible to add to your Rolex collection or simply as your "good" watch, opting for the vintage original Rolex Explorer reference number 6610 would be a safe bet.

On the other hand, the Explorer 14270 holds an important place in horological history. Yet, it seems to be stuck somewhere in the watch purgatory—not old enough to be vintage, not new enough to be cool. This has made it a severely underrated timepiece in the collecting world, albeit having a passionate following among enthusiasts.

It appears that almost every watch made by Rolex is a classic, but many styles may not have been initially popular and only gained popularity decades later!

Affordable Explorer Homage Watches Inspired by the Explorer

The Explorer watch series, renowned in the history of watchmaking, has been in existence since 1952 and continues to have a strong presence in the second-hand market, boasting a wide user base.

For many customers, the steep prices of pre-owned Explorers in the secondary market can be daunting, even if they harbor a deep affection for a particular model. As a result, many micro-watch brands have introduced Explorer homage watches inspired by the vintage 36mm Explorer design and prototype. These numerous 36mm Explorer homage watches often exhibit excellent quality and attention to detail while offering affordable prices, providing us with better opportunities to explore and understand the world of vintage Explorers.

Steinhart Watches has produced many watches designed almost identically to the vintage Rolex prototypes, albeit at significantly lower prices compared to Rolex. While being a Swiss brand, you may not expect more in terms of movement and manufacturing details. On the other hand, Merci, a fashion brand from France, collaborated with La Montre Merci to release the LMM-01 Explorer watch, which takes inspiration from the Explorer but injects more modern fashion elements into its design. Additionally, micro-brands like Christopher and Lorier have also introduced affordable 36mm Explorer homage watches.

These affordable homage watches not only pay tribute to the iconic Explorer series but also make it more accessible to enthusiasts who may not be able to afford the original vintage pieces. They provide a gateway for enthusiasts to delve into the world of vintage Explorers without breaking the bank.

Baltany Explorer Welcomes a New Addition

The micro-watch brand Baltany has always been dedicated to reviving vintage watch designs. Despite being founded in 2021 and officially entering the market towards the end of the same year, the brand has quickly made its mark.

Driven by a passion for timepieces, Baltany's two founding members drew inspiration from the illustrious history of the Explorer watch series. Among their favorites has always been the 36mm vintage Explorer. Thus, in April 2023, Baltany introduced its first Explorer homage watch.

Naturally evoking a sense of vintage nostalgia, Explorer watches were the perfect canvas for Baltany to blend retro charm with modern aesthetics. Opting for a 39mm size and featuring applied numerals at 3, 6, and 9 o'clock, Baltany carefully crafted its homage to the Explorer. The classic matte black dial was an instant hit, but it was the original red dial that truly captured the market's attention. With its sunburst effect and amber gleam, the red enamel dial perfectly complemented the polished applied numerals, striking a balance between vintage warmth and modern sophistication.

What's more, this meticulously detailed Baltany Explorer comes at an affordable price of around $220. Baltany remains committed to providing consumers with reliable, sturdy luxury watches at prices they can afford – it's our mission and promise.

To further enrich the options for customers, Baltany launched the 36mm Explorer homage watch in 2024. For aficionados of vintage timepieces, the 36mm size exudes even more retro charm, and its smaller dimensions ensure comfortable wear for prolonged periods.
